Four ways to go beyond class
Students can compete, create, travel, serve, or combine all four. The program grows across grade levels without requiring every student to choose the same path.
Academic competitions
ETC Nationwide Games in September and December connect students with classics programs across the country.
The March National Latin Exam covers grammar, mythology, derivatives, literature, Roman life, history, geography, and oral Latin.
Philadelphia Classical Society Latin Week offers an academic exam alongside its creative categories.
Creative work
The February PCS Art Contest invites original responses to Greco-Roman myth, history, and literature across nine categories.
The May SCRIBO contest gives students an international audience for creative writing in Latin.
Latin Club projects turn mythology, sayings, festivals, and Roman imagery into collaborative work.
Conventions & travel
An 8th-grade weekend field trip takes place each April.
The May PAJCL State Convention brings 8th graders to Penn State for academics, athletics, arts, talent shows, and quizzo.
Students join peers from across Pennsylvania through the state and national Junior Classical Leagues.
Community participation
National Classics Week combines grade-level academic and athletic challenges with a book drive and local-government letter campaign.
Seasonal food and toy drives support local families.
Community-center events and service at the state convention make participation part of the program year.

Convention Preparation Checklist

Our students are members of the National and Pennsylvania Junior Classical Leagues — the largest classical organizations for young people in the country. Contests, conventions, and Latin Club connect our classroom to a statewide and national community.

III · Latin Club
One club, three seasons
SRMS Latin Club meets after school in the cafeteria, with major joint events alongside the high school. The calendar moves from welcoming and making to festivals, convention, and recognition.
Fall · Sep–Dec
Meet, make, and celebrate
A welcome meeting opens the year, followed by pumpkin painting, Cerealia, and a joint Saturnalia celebration.
Winter · Feb–Mar
Culture through conversation
Lupercalia and the Ides of March become starting points for history, storytelling, games, and club challenges.
Spring · Apr–Jun
Rome's birthday to recognition
Latin Week and Rome's birthday lead into the state convention, then an awards BBQ closes the year.
IV · Service
Showing up for our community
Service is part of the program rhythm, not a separate add-on. Three recurring moments carry students from local holiday support to accessible community events and statewide participation.
Holiday season
Food & toy drives
November and December collections support neighbors, local families, and children in the community.
Winter & spring
Community-center partnerships
Students share a Valentine's celebration in February and help host accessible seated Olympics in April.
State convention
Service at States
In May, students contribute through service while participating in the PAJCL State Convention.
